Portfolio of Work

Most of the writing and editing work that I've done since the fall of 2009 has been online content. This is a small sampling of the content I've created or edited. Unless stated as being offline content, all material is hosted online in some capacity. In nearly all cases, the content is now legally controlled by the entity I wrote/edited for. I asked for permission to post these links to my portfolio.

Writing and Editing:

LabLynx.com and LIMSWiki.org - Laboratory Informatics (April '11 to June '11; September '11 to Current): I've been tasked with helping with the creation of infrastructure for a Creative Commons-licensed wiki about the increasingly relevant field of laboratory informatics. In the spring of '11 I worked to build some of the infrastructure for LIMSWiki.org. This fall I began working on the project again, tasked with cleaning up data entry errors that were introduced over the summer and adding more infrastructure. There's a lot of work still to be done on it, however, before consistent useful content can be regularly added.

1. LIMSWiki.org (incomplete)

Travel.AOL.com - Travel Guides and Information (October '10 to May '11): I wrote travel articles for AOL Travel, based upon their daily and weekly specifications. Articles ranged in length from 450 words to as many as 1,200+ words.

LapromMoving.com and 24Moving.com (April '10, October '10): I've written and edited offline content for these two companies. (No online writing/editing has been done with them.) That content has primarily been in the form of text for brochures, flyers, and newsletters. Examples can be provided upon request.

FixedPriceMovers.com - A Moving Company (October '10): I wrote the web content for this site based on the demands the client laid out. Changes are live and encompass most of the site.

LearnTheNet.com - Your Online Guide (December '09 to May '10): I wrote 10 full-length articles intended for children and adults just learning about the Internet. These articles were more or less how-to guides related to social networking, the Internet, and education. I also briefly wrote blog posts until I left to teach English in Spain for the summer. Here are two examples from those ten articles, as well as a link to the blog posts.

1. LinkedIn: Social Networking For Professionals
2. Doing Research on the Internet
3. LearnTheNet.com Blog Posts Written by Me

AGlobalWorld.com "Holidays Around the World" (October '09 to January '10): I wrote and edited short articles detailing some of the holidays around the world. I was cut due to budget considerations. Here are three examples from the many I wrote.

1. The King’s Birthday Is Celebrated in Bhutan
2. Canada Observes Remembrance Day
3. Constitution Day Observed in Azerbaijan

Teaching:

I've taught English in Spain for a total of two years and an additional summer. (August 2007 to August 2009; June 2010 to August 2010) To learn more about my teaching adventures, please head over to my photo and video gallery.

Miscellaneous:

Phrase Convertor Project (December '09 to March '10): I had a client at the end of 2009 ask me to work on a very interesting and unique project. I was asked to create a set of rules that, when plugged into a Visual Basic program, would as much as possible convert any inputted sentence into the second-person simple present tense. The extent of this project was massive, fun, and occasionally frustrating. I first had to compile a "complete as possible" list of verbs in the English language. From there I used Microsoft Excel to apply 76 different potential verb case rules — including negatives — to each verb. If memory serves me correctly, I had over 9,000 verbs. The final size of the "master rules" Excel file was a whopping 64.7 MB. As I still own the rights to this file, and I consider it valuable, I'll only include a tiny sampling of the project here. This sample includes only ten verbs and only 38 of the 76 verb case rules. Please contact me if you wish to discuss the purchase of the full file.
